MTBS is delighted to announce that a feasibility study for developing inland waterway passenger transport in Monrovia, Liberia has been completed. Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia, faces critical urban mobility challenges. Road infrastructure is severely stressed, which leads to congestion and delays. With various navigable rivers running through Monrovia, could transport of passengers by water be part of the solution to alleviate congestion on the road network and connect people living in city’s periphery?
Infrastructure development is a key driver for progress across the African continent and a critical enabler for productivity and sustainable economic growth. In Monrovia, a vast infrastructure deficit is a constraint on its growth, but also an opportunity to leapfrog to new, more efficient technologies. In cooperation with the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Transport, our project team was tasked with developing a concept design for waterway infrastructure, conducting an environmental and social screening study, and providing an economic and financial feasibility assessment.
Together with its partners CDR International and Petra Resources Incorporated, MTBS executed the study to inform decision-making on improving urban mobility. The study was commissioned by the African Development Bank. Following a multi-criteria analysis workshop with project stakeholders, MTBS examined the feasibility of a ‘preferred option’ for the development of waterborne passenger transport in the city. Criteria included connectivity, travel time savings, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and affordability, amongst others. The results were presented during a one-day event in Monrovia. We look back on an exciting period and a successful collaboration with our partners.
